When people see the words email marketing, it can sometimes be a bit scary and nerve-racking as it can be a complicated process, but it doesn’t have to be! Email marketing can be used in a positive and effective way for your company or brand and doesn’t have to be seen as useless, because it does work, it all depends on how you approach it

The first step you want to do when you are thinking about email marketing is to establish your goals before jumping head fist. It’s important to take a step back and think about your goals and what you are really wanting to achieve with email, because this will then determine the types of campaigns you will be sending, your target audience, content and how you measure your success. Most people see email marketing as ‘spam’ but it can actually be one of the most powerful ways to reach your audience and can be used to achieve a number of different objectives.

After you’ve established your goals, it’s time to build your email list. You can do this in two main ways—import a list of known contacts or build a new list from scratch. It all depends on what your end goal is.

Once you have built your email list, you then need to figure out what kind of campaigns you want to send. The four main kinds consist of a newsletter, marketing offer, announcement and event invitation. An email newsletter is a regularly distributed email that is generally about one main topic of interest, a marketing offer email is essentially any campaign you send out with the goal of driving a direct response, an announcement is an email you’ve sent to your subscribers announcing a new product, feature or service, and an event invitation email is designed to increase awareness about your upcoming event and encouraging people to attend.

Once you have done all three steps, you can then go ahead and create your first campaign and don’t forget to measure your success so you know what worked, what didn’t work and how you can improve for the future!  We recommend the use of Mailchimp as a great place to start, due to it's ease of use, range of templates and drag and drop abilities.
